Based on the definitions given in the chapter for a Christian counselor, I would choose the role of a professional counselor. According to Simmons (2019) being a licensed professional counselor opens a variety of doors, with the possibility of making a higher salary (Simmons, 2019). I would say that my choice has a lot to do with flexibility and diversity. I don’t believe I will be set on one specific type of counseling. Of course, I would like to be proficient in everything that I do but due to who and how I am I already know that I would like to take on different challenges with a different background. According to Simmons (2019) Sue Pearson, M. Ed. Stated that she wanted to meet her clients right where they were. She wanted them to be comfortable and be able to share whatever was troubling them without judgment. As a counselor that is exactly what I would like to do. It also seems that the other Christian counselor has limitations on them.
Some issues that I may need to pay attention to in my professional development as I navigate between professional counseling and the Christian faith commitments are trying my best not to force my own beliefs and values on my clients. I will have to continuously pay attention and focus on the session that I am having. Consistently educating myself and seeking information from other mental health professionals. I must make sure that I am not judging or telling the client what they need to do based on my views and beliefs.
I would say my views align with the integration model. The integration model offers the counselor to modify and or customize the way they would approach a client’s situation. I believe the integration model allows me to work in a way that mirrors my viewpoint as a Christian and my belief in Psychology. The only challenges that I can see if being aware of my beliefs and not imposing them on the client.
The Code A.4.b of the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) relates to me as I pursue my degree in professional counseling because it is a guide for me to work by. It explains the ethical principles and provides a base for me when making decisions and the behavior that should be conducted during the session. The way I should operate as a counselor from a Christian worldview and not impose my values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors onto my clients is by following the ACA Code of Ethics and being self-aware, continuing education, and seeking guidance. According to Birrell, & Bruns (2016) It is quite easy for a counselor’s viewpoints and beliefs to lead a person’s ethical decision-making, which could have a major impact on the counselor following the code of ethics (Birrell, & Bruns 2016). Therefore, staying vigilant and aware at all times will assist me as a counselor.
