In this presentation, we discuss the importance of the role play in counselor education, and discuss the need to design this (and other learning activities) in a manner consistent with best practices in instructional design. We discuss the role play from a historical, practical, and academic manner, and discuss principles of instructional design as they relate to the learning activity we refer to as the role plan. Ethical considerations are discussed, and opportunities for future research are considered.
